Addressing the BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting in Johannesburg, she referred to the recent BRICS National Security Advisors’ (NSAs) meeting which had deliberated in detail on issues like UN reforms, peacekeeping, energy security, international and regional hot-spots and other such issues. The meeting was attended by Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi, Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov, Brazil foreign minister Marcos Bezerra and South African foreign minister Lindiwe Sisulu. It is being held to prepare the ground for the 10th BRICS Summit later this year in Johannesburg at which Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the Indian delegation. Ms Swaraj recalled that BRICS leaders had given their foreign ministers a ‘robust mandate’ on counter-terrorism at the Xiamen BRICS Summit last year. PM Modi had called for a BRICS counter-terrorism strategy for joint-action with the focus on money laundering, terrorist-finance, cyber-space and de-radicalisation as priorities of the five-nation grouping, she added. “Our leaders have also called for making UN counterterrorism framework efficient and effective. We reiterate our commitment to implement our Leaders’ mandate on counter terrorism under South Africa’s BRICS chairmanship,’’ she said. The minister said the BRICS meeting was taking place at a time when multilateralism, international trade, and rulesbased world order faced strong head-winds.Though the global economy has exhibited signs of recovery, the challenges to long-term growth continue to persist. Ensuring that the benefits of globalisation were shared widely remained a challenge, she added. Cong demands Smriti’s ouster for MP funds’ misuse AHMEDABAD, 4 JUNE The Gujarat unit of the Congress has demanded the resignation of textiles minister Smriti Irani for alleged financial irregularities in spending from her MP Local Area Development (MPLAD) funds. Ms Irani, a Rajya Sabha member from Gujarat, had adopted a village in Anand district under the Sansad Adarsh GramYojana (SAGY) in which the irregularities have taken place, the Congress has alleged while demanding her resignation from the Union Ministry. Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee president Amit Chavda said that Ms Irani had spent the MPLAD funds without inviting any tenders in her adopted village. Chavda said that the contracts for the works were awarded without tenders to Sharda Manjoor Kamdar Sahkari Mandli under pressure from Ms Irani and her staff. “Smriti Irani and her staff had coerced the officials into awarding contracts to one Sharda Majoor Kamdar Sahkari Mandli... so that funds could be easily misused and misappropriated and fraud goes unnoticed,” he said. The Congress had in July 2017 moved the Gujarat High Court against the alleged irregularities after the Anand district administration found serious ‘malpractices’ in the spending by Ms Irani. The district collector had in February this year ordered the Mandli to return Rs 2.95 crore to the government with 18 per cent interest. The money has not been deposited into the government’s account till now, said Chavda. “After these revelations of malpractices, Irani has no moral right to continue as minister,” SNS he said.
