The Assembly was abruptly dissolved on November 21, hours after the PDP staked claim to form a government with the backing of rival National Conference and the Congress, followed by another bid from the two-member People's Conference which claimed the support of the BJP and 18 MLAs from other parties. Mufti in a tweet said, “Some sincere suggestions from well wishers for me to go to court against Governor's dissolution of Assembly. PDP , NC, INC had come together to safeguard state interests. It is my considered opinion that we must go to people's court which is superior to any other forum.” The Governor had justified the decision, saying it was necessary to stop the use of money and horse-trading in government formation. The state was put under Governor's Rule on June 19 after the BJP withdrew from the coalition government with the PDP, but the Governor decided to keep the Assembly in suspended animation. PDP president Mehbooba Mufti said instead of violence and bloodshed, the Kashmir problem can be resolved through “Kartarpur like initiatives”. “Bold, honest and humanitarian initiatives are needed to resolve Jammu and Kashmir problem. It is worthwhile to witness that Kartarpur corridor was opened on a day when so many human lives were taken by terrorism in Mumbai in 2008,” the PDP chief said. Sanction to prosecute PC granted, says CBI NEW DELHI, 26 NOVEMBER In a setback to former Union minister P Chidambaram, the CBI on Monday told a court that the Centre has granted sanction for prosecution of the senior Congress leader in the Aircel-Maxis case. The court, which further extended the protection from arrest to Chidambaram and his son Karti till December 18, also granted three weeks to the probe agency to get sanction against some other people who are accused in the case. Special Judge O P Saini posted the next date of hearing on December 18. There are 18 accused in the case. Besides Chidambaram, sanction is required for the prosection of five public servants. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta submitted on behalf of the CBI that “the competent authority in the central government has accorded sanction for prosecution of accused P Chidambaram under section 197 of CrPC and section 19 of Prevention of Corruption Act”. “Sanction for prosecution in respect of remaining accused public servants (five) are still awaited,” he said, seeking two more weeks to get the nod. The CBI said that the court's refusal to grant more time to obtain the sanction for other accused “in a matter pertaining to such a serious offences, may frustrate the cause of justice”. CMYK On the 10th anniversary of the 26/11 attack, India on Monday again asked Pakistan to give up ‘double standards’ in dealing with terrorism and expeditiously bring to justice the perpetrators of the Mumbai carnage. "This is not just a matter of Pakistan’s accountability to the families of the innocent victims who fell to terrorists, but also an international obligation," New Delhi said in a statement. The government said it was a matter of deep anguish that even after 10 years of the heinous terror attack, the families of 166 victims from 15 countries across the globe still awaited closure, with Pakistan showing little sincerity in bringing perpetrators to justice. The planners of 26/11 were still roaming the streets of Pakistan with impunity, it added, in an obvious reference to JuD chief Hafiz Saeed, the plotter of the Mumbai attack. India asserted that the 26/11 attack was planned, executed and launched from Pakistan SNS territory. Vice-President M. Venkaiah Naidu (C), Punjab CM Amarinder Singh (2R), Governor VP Singh Badnore (2L), and Union Ministers light an oil lamp during the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the planned Dera Baba NanakKartarpur Sahib road corridor to the Pakistan border. AFP SNS & PTI GURDASPUR, 26 NOVEMBER Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu and Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Monday laid the foundation stone of Kartarpur corridor, which would facilitate Indian Sikh pilgrims in visiting the 16th-century Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan. The gurdwara, on the banks of Ravi river, has historical significance for Sikhs as Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism, spent 18 years there. Established by the first Sikh Guru in 1522, the shrine is about three-four km from the international border. The opening of a corridor was a long-pending demand of the Sikh community. The decision to build the corridor from Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur district to the international border was taken by the Union Cabinet on November 22. Pakistan is to build it on its side of the border and it has planned a ground-breaking ceremony for Wednesday. The proposal to open the cross-border passage for Sikh pilgrims comes at a time when India-Pakistan ties have nosedived and all bilateral engagements postponed following a number of terror attacks by Pakistan-based groups since 2016, including on Pathankot Air Force Station. On November 18 this year, two men on a motorbike hurled a hand grenade on a religious congregation in Amritsar, which killed three people and injured more than 20. The Punjab chief minister has blamed Pakistan's spy agency ISI for the attack. Naidu and Singh laid the foundation stone digitally by pressing a button at the ceremony in Mann village near the India-Pakistan border in Gurdaspur district.
