The move was hailed by the Congress leaders and workers across the country, many of whom believe that this would enthuse and galvanise their rank and file and could prove to be a "game-changer" for the party in the upcoming general elections. They had been pressing for an active political role in an official capacity for Priyanka in the Congress party for many years. The younger scion of the Nehru-Gandhi family, Priyanka, 47, is widely dubbed as a "charismatic crowd-puller" and "natural communicator", although she had confined herself so far to managing the Lok Sabha campaign for Amethi and Rae Bareli constituencies of Rahul and their mother Sonia Gandhi, respectively, in UP besides playing a "behind-the-scenes" role CBI books AI ex-chief for ‘irregularities’ as an adviser to them in some critical political matters. Priyanka, wife of controversial businessman Robert Vadra and mother of two children, will take charge of her formal political role from the first week of February, a statement issued by the AICC said. Congress president also appointed senior party leader from Madhya Pardesh, Jyotiraditya Scindia, 48, as AICC general secretary in charge of Western UP Priyanka's for. mal entry into the politicallycrucial Hindi heartland state, UP which accounts , for 80 Lok Sabha seats, signalled the Congress's clear intention and plan that it would go all out in fighting the upcoming elections there, even as the Mayawatiled BSP and the Akhilesh Yadav-led SP have already stitched up their alliance while keeping the Congress out of it. Treading cautiously on this sensitive matter, Rahul, who is currently on a tour of Amethi, again struck conciliatory notes, saying he respected both Mayawati and Akhilesh and that they have friendly relations. He said all of them shared a common objective to defeat the ruling BJP and that the Congress was ready to talk to the BSP-SP combine and cooperate with them in this regard. “Our ideologies have many similarities...Our fight is against the BJP and wher, ever we can cooperate with Mayawati and Akhilesh....wherever we can work together to defeat the BJP we will cooper, ate.... But it is our job to spread the Congress ideology and make a place for it for which we have taken a big step,” he said. Maintaining that the Congress, which has remained in political wilderness in UP for the last several decades, has its own ideology and politics, Rahul told reporters his party would like to usher in a "new and positive politics of change and development for the youths and farmers" of the state. It is in this context that Priyanka's appointment should be construed as a "big step", said Rahul, adding his sister was a "capable" leader and that both Priyanka and Scindia had been given the "mission" beyond the general elections to revive and rejuvenate the party in UP . Rahul maintained that the Congress would like to "play on the front foot, be it Gujarat or Uttar Pradesh or anywhere” and that "we won't play on the back foot now". Both Priyanka and Scindia are expected to handle about 40 parliamentary seats each in UP . The charge of Eastern UP for Priyanka assumes additional significance since this belt has the constituencies of both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath in Varanasi and Gorakhpur, respectively. The incumbent AICC general secretary in charge of UP, Ghulam Nabi Azad, was today given the charge of Haryana. Congress president also relieved Ashok Gehlot, who is currently Rajasthan CM, of his key responsibility as AICC general secretary in charge of organisation, giving this charge to party leader from Kerala, K C Venugopal, who is already AICC general secretary in charge of Karnataka affairs.
