The 0.313 acre plot on which the Babri Masjid stood before it was torn down by Hindutva zealots on 6 December 1992 was within the 2.77 acre-disputed premises. After the destruction of the Babri Masjid that triggered Hindu-Muslim riots across the country leaving a few thousand people dead, the then Congress-led central government had acquired 67.703 acres of land, including the 2.77 acres disputed land, in Ayodhya through a legislation in 1993. The Ram Janambhoomi Nyas, a trust to promote construction of Ram Temple, is the owner of Rahul meets Parrikar, enquires about his health PRESS TRUST OF INDIA PANAJI, 29 JANUARY Congress chief Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday met Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar at the state Assembly complex here and enquired about his health. Parrikar, 63, who has been suffering from a pancreatic ailment, heads the BJP-led government in the coastal state. The meeting comes a day after Gandhi alleged that the “Goa audio tapes”, cited by the Congress to attack the Centre on the Rafale issue, were authentic and Parrikar was in possession of“explosive secrets” that give him power over Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Gandhi arrived in the Assembly premises around noon, soon after the House was adjourned following Goa Governor Mridula Sinha's address, which was boycotted by Congress members. After his arrival, the Congress president went to meet the chief minister in his chamber in the assembly complex. Gandhi later went to the opposition lobby in the Assembly to meet Congress MLAs. The Ram Janambhoomi Nyas (RJN) is the owner of as much as 42 acres of the acquired non-disputed land. The application filed by the BJPled government in the apex court Tuesday claimed that only 0.313 acre on which the Babri Masjid stood before demolition was disputed land. about 42 acres of the acquired non-disputed land. The BJP-led central government has been facing growing pressure from the RSS and other Sangh Parivar and Hindutva groups to move swiftly on the Ayodhya front. The government's politically-significant move might result in some form of construction of a Ram temple by these groups outside the disputed site if the handover is allowed by the apex court. The Centre's move came even as the apex court is set to hear 14 appeals against the 2010 Allahabad High Court judgment, delivered in four civil suits, which had ruled that the 2.77-acre land be divided equally between three parties ~ the Sunni Waqf Board, the Nirmohi Akhara and Ram Lalla. On 25 January, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi had reconstituted the five-judge Constitution Bench to hear the Ayodhya land title dispute case. In its 33-page application filed in the top court today, the Centre sought modification of its 31 March 2003 order to permit it to to return 67.390 acres of “nondisputed” surplus/superflous land around the disputed Ayodhya site to the original owners. The apex court had then ordered the Centre to maintain the “status quo” with regard to the entire land including the non-disputed acquired land in Ayodhya. The Centre's application claimed that only 0.313 acre of land was disputed. “The applicant (Centre) is filing this application seeking permission of this court to permit the applicant to fulfil the duty to revert/restore/hand over the excess/superfluous land acquired under the Acquisition of Certain Areas of Ayodhya Act, 1993,” it said. Congress questions plea timing NEW DELHI, 29 JANUARY The Congress on Tuesday questioned the timing of the Centre's application in the Supreme Court on the Ayodhya matter seeking permission to return undisputed “surplus” land to its original owners, saying people will decide on the intent of its “sudden” move which has come merely two months before the general elections. The Opposition party, however, said that it has “no opinion” on the plea for a change in status quo that has been maintained for 16 years and it was a matter between the Supreme Court and the Centre. The BJP said the government's plea could pave the way for construction of PTI a Ram temple. There was no discussion other than enquiring about his health condition.” Kavlekar said Rahul Gandhi had an informal discussion with Congress MLAs in Goa as he would be arriving here next month to address party workers. Rahul Gandhi and his mother Sonia Gandhi were on a private visit to the coastal state. SUBRATA DUTTA Don’t treat your ward’s report card as your visiting card: PM to parents PTI NEW DELHI, 29 JANUARY Parents should not treat the “report cards” of children as their “visiting cards” or expect them to fulfil their unfulfilled dreams, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he interacted on Tuesday with around 2,000 students, teachers and parents. He encouraged parents to be a factor of motivation and encouragement for their children. “I would request parents, do not expect your children to fulfil your unfulfilled dreams. Every child has his or her own potential and strengths...It is important to understand these positives of every child. Parents often treat the report cards of their children as their visiting cards and that adds extra pressure on them which is very unreal and unhealthy,” he said in the second edition of “pariksha pe charcha”. “Only when you take it in spirit and encourage your child, a 60 per cent holder move towards 70 or 80 per Prime Minister Narendra Modi with students, during the ‘ParikSNS sha Par Charcha 2.0’, in the Capital on Tuesday. cent. If you only criticise and scold your child for not getting 90 per cent, you will demotivate your child to start believing that they are incapable. This will take their grades further down towards 40 per cent. “If parents start comparing their child with achievement of others, it disappoints the child. Parents should encourage their children for every small improvement,” the prime minister added. Modi said at present, the education system has become rank-bound and rather than running behind ranks, parents and teachers should teach the students to learn from things around them. “Live freely, observe and be curious to know new things rather than focussing on achieving only ranks. These days the meaning of education has narrowed down to get- ting ranks in exam for many,” he said. With less than a month to go for the class 10 and class 12 examinations, Modi discussed ways to handle the exam stress in the interactive session at the Talkatora Stadium where students from across the country got a chance to participate. “Our learning cannot be reduced to exams only. Our education must equip us to face various challenges of life as well. I sincerely believe that anything that challenges us, polishes us too. If there is nothing to test us, then we become complacent. There must always be something to challenge us,” he said. Jairpeet Singh, a student based in Tehran, asked the prime minister about the need to encourage school children constantly and how it makes them happy. “Compare yourself with your old records, you are your own competition, you break your records, you will never have the chance to drown in a trough of despair if you break your records yourself,” the prime minister replied.
