Slugfest over alleged comments against PM at Congress rally, BJP demands apology STATESMAN NEWS SERVICE New Delhi, 15 December The Lok Sabha on Monday witnessed heated scenes and disruptions over allegedly threatening slogans raised against Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a Congress rally in Delhi on Sunday. At the “Vote Chor, Gaddi Chhod” rally at Ramlila Maidan, a slogan implying harm to the Prime Minister was reportedly raised by some participants, triggering sharp reactions from the ruling BJP, and a demand for an unconditional apology from the Congress leadership. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju asked the Congress leadership, including Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, to take responsibility for the remarks and apologise from the floor of Parliament. Emphasising the importance of democratic decorum, he also recounted an incident when PM Modi had immediately asked a BJP MP to apologise for using inappropriate language against Opposition leaders, insisting that such slogans reflect a “dangerous mindset.” “The BJP-NDA never said anything about killing anyone or anyone's parents... We might be political rivals, but we wish each other well if one is ailing, on birthdays or on such occasions... “What kind of mindset is this which makes public announcements about killing rivals? If some opposition leaders speak about killing the PM, it is really unfortunate. Merely condemning is not enough,” he said. Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan echoed similar views, accusing the Congress of resorting to abusive politics due to declining public support. The Congress, meanwhile, dismissed the BJP’s allegations as “politically motivated” and termed the uproar a “baseless drama.” According to Congress’ K C Venugopal, no senior Congress leader had made any threatening remarks, and accused the BJP of overreacting because the rally was a “huge success”. He also pointed to language used by Home Minister Amit Shah in Parliament in the past, arguing that it did not align with the values the BJP claimed to uphold. “This is baseless drama they have created today because we conducted a successful rally in Delhi yesterday. I ask Kiren Rijiju Ji, did any Congress leader say anything?” Venugopal questioned. “On the other hand, we saw the language Amit Shah Ji used in Parliament last week. No leader, whether at the state or district level, would do any such thing,” he added. Congress leader Manickam Tagore also said that the BJP was “rattled” by the growing momentum of the “Vote Chor, Gaddi Chhod” campaign, and questioned why similar outrage was not shown over derogatory language used by BJP leaders in Parliament. Nitin Nabin takes charge as BJP national working president STATESMAN NEWS SERVICE New Delhi, 15 December BJP’s surprise pick Nitin Nabin, on Monday, assumed his duties as the party’s national working president. Nabin received a grand welcome in Delhi as he arrived at the BJP's headquarters. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, party president J P Nadda, and Union Minister Piyush Goyal were present to welcome Nabin amid rousing sloganeering by party’ workers. The newly appointed BJP national working president paid floral tributes to party ideologues Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee and Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya. Nabin was appointed by the BJP Parliamentary Board on Sunday. Nabin, 45, will function as the working president until the full election to appoint the next full-term BJP chief is formally held. Nadda, too, was initially made the party’s working president before his appointment as the full-time chief. The general convention has been that the working president eventually becomes the party president. Once formally elected, Nabin will be the youngest BJP president. Congratulating him, Shah expressed confidence that the party will expand even further under his leadership. “I am confident that under your leadership, the organisation will expand further, and you will take the policies of the Narendra Modi government and the party’s ideology to the people. I pray to God for your successful tenure,” the Home Minister said. Earlier, he was accorded a warm welcome at Indira Gandhi International Airport by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, BJP National General Secretary Vinod Tawde, and other senior party leaders. Nabin, who currently serves as a minister in the Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government, was appointed as the national working president with immediate effect on Sunday—seen as a part of a generational transition, placing him in line to succeed Nadda, who is on extension. At 45, he is the youngest leader to be elevated to the post of the party’s national working president.
