The high-level engagement came at a time when Venezuela has emerged as a significant supplier of crude oil to India, giving renewed momentum to bilateral ties and opening avenues for deeper economic cooperation. During their discussions, Mr Modi and Ms Rodriguez reviewed the full spectrum of India-Venezuela relations and explored opportunities longer feasible due to a shortage of available land. The state government has instead prepared an alternative plan centred on Dadanpatrabar, located around 10 kilometres from Tajpur. Speaking after a meeting at Nabanna with Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal on ports, coastal development and Kolkata’s riverfront areas, Mr Adhikari said: “The state does not possess sufficient land at Tajpur to support a deep -sea port project. Thousands of acres of land are required for a deep-sea port. Since the state does not have adequate land at Tajpur, the project is not viable there. This was also a reason why the Adanis had moved away from the proposal.” to strengthen collaboration across multiple sectors. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the leaders examined ongoing cooperation and identified new areas for engagement. “The leaders reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral relations and explored new avenues of cooperation in energy, trade, investment, healthcare, automobiles among others,” the ministry said in a statement posted on its WhatsApp channel. The issue of energy coop- eration figured prominently in the discussions. Briefing the media after the talks, MEA Secretary (East) Rudrendra Tandon described the discussions as strongly focused on building a long-term energy partnership. He noted that Venezuela had already emerged as India’s third-largest crude oil supplier, underlining the South American nation's growing importance in India’s energy security calculations. “There is perfect complementarity for India and Venezuela to work in the energy sector, both upstream as well as downstream,” Mr Tandon said, stressing that Venezuela views India as a stable and reliable demand partner for years to come. The assessment reflects the strategic logic underpinning the relationship: Venezuela possesses some of the world’s largest proven oil reserves, while India remains one of the fastest-growing energyconsuming economies.
