SC to hear plea seeking entry of women in mosques: The Supreme Court on Tuesday agreed to hear a plea of a Pune-based Muslim couple seeking a direction to allow entry of women in all mosques. The SC agreed to hear the plea citing the verdict in Sabarimala temple case while accepting the petition filed by the Pune-based couple. A bench headed by Justice SA Bobde said since the top court had already passed a judgment in Sabarimala case, it will now examine this petition as well. Officials search Kanimozhi's residence in TN: Ahead of the April 18 Lok Sabha polls, election officials on Tuesday conducted searches at the residence of DMK leader Kanimozhi at Tuticorin in south Tamil Nadu from where she is contesting. Official sources indicated that the searches were held following “some inputs,” but they did not elaborate. Income Tax officials were also “assisting” the local poll officials, they told PTI. The outcome of the searches were not known immediately. SILVER 37,350.00 00.00 CHENNAI, 16 APRIL Will DMK chief M.K.Stalin emerge as the winner in the crucial 2019 polls? With the passing away of both Jayalalitha and Karunanidhi, both Dravidian majors AIADMK and DMK - have lost their iconic leaders who had ruled the state alternatively and treated their parties like personal fiefdoms. With no charismatic leader heading any of the small or big Dravidian parties, DMK chief M.K.Stalin, who succeeded Karunanidhi, has the edge if he goes about in the right manner. He is facing polls for the first time after his father’s death. Running a party founded on lofty ideals can be a weighty job. Nevertheless Stalin is undaunted. Stalin may not have the charisma or the literary reputation of his father nor led a colourful life like him. But he BRENT CRUDE (IN $) 71.27 +0.09 Workers questioned over Notre-Dame inferno SC refuses reprieve for Mayawati SNS & PTI NEW DELHI, 16 APRIL he Supreme Court on Tuesday expressed satisfaction over the swift action taken by the Election Commission against various politicians, including Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and BSP supremo Mayawati, for their alleged communal speeches during campaigning saying the poll panel has now “woken up to its powers”. The apex court refused Mayawati's plea challenging the EC on Monday banning her from campaigning for 48 hours. A day after EC found itself “toothless” against hate speeches, which had invited the ire of the top court, the poll panel told a bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi that it has barred Adiytanath, Mayawati, Union Minister Maneka Gandhi and Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan from campaigning for varying hours. The bench, also comprising Justice Sanjiv Khanna, refused to consider Mayawati's plea challenging the EC's 48-hour campaign ban on her on the ground that it has been T inflicted on her without being granted an opportunity to put forth her views. “File a Special Leave Petition or an appeal if you want. We are not commenting on anything now,” the bench told senior lawyer Dushyant Dave, representing the BSP supremo. The EC has acted because of the apex court's order and the ban is “extremely drastic” in view of the fact that she has not been heard and, moreover, she has prior scheduled public meetings, Dave said. The bench, which had summoned an EC official for Tuesday to examine the ambit of the poll panel to deal with hate speeches, said, “It seems you have got your powers. It seems you have woken up to your powers”. Senior advocate C A Sundaram, appearing for the EC, said, “We have found we have several pow- ers” and listed out the action taken by the poll panel against some politicians. “Pursuant to the order passed yesterday, the Election Commission of India has taken action and the appropriate details of which have been submitted. No further order is called for today,” the bench said, adding that the petitioner may mention the plea in future if the need arises. The EC on Monday imposed a nationwide campaign ban on Adityanath for 72 hours and on Maneka Gandhi and Mayawati for 48 hours from Tuesday for their “provocative” communal remarks, which it said had the “propensity to polarise the elections”. A 72-hour campaign ban has also been imposed on Samajwadi Party's Azam Khan for his alleged “khaki underwear” jibe against actor-politician Jaya Prada, who is his rival BJP candi- Airlines told to cut fares on 10 routes; Goyal ‘opts out’ PRESS TRUST OF INDIA NEW DELHI, 16 APRIL Aviation watchdog DGCA on Tuesday asked airlines to reduce fares on 10 domestic routes to “reasonable levels” as ticket prices on these high density routes have risen up to 30 per cent in the last one month, according to a senior official. Amid concerns over spike in airfares, mainly after grounding of scores of planes by ailing Jet Airways, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) held a meeting with representatives of various airlines. Speaking about various steps being taken to address capacity and other issues, Civil Aviation Secretary Pradeep Singh Kharola said the DGCA reviewed airfare movement in 40 high density sectors. A comparison between current ticket prices and those during March 7-14 period, when it was normal season, was done by the watchdog. It was found that airfares rose 10-30 per cent on 10 routes and on those routes, airlines have been asked to reduce the ticket prices to “reasonable levels”, Kharola told reporters here. A senior DGCA official said the regulator would continue to monitor airfare movements on a daily basis and also engage with airline for appropriate action. Airlines were advised to continue to monitor at their level and provide information to the DGCA to keep fares low as far as possible, he noted. “Airlines representative also intimated DGCA that they have removed the few higher buckets from sale and offering tickets to passengers in lower fare buckets. Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal has decided not to bid for acquiring stake in the cash-strapped airline, sources said on Tuesday. Cash-strapped Jet Airways said it is awaiting “emergency liquidity support” from the SBI-led consortium of lenders to arrest further deterioration in its services. The airline, which is operating only five planes, said its operations have been impacted due to critical liquidity position. date in the Rampur Lok Sabha seat. The all-India ban on all four leaders -two from the ruling BJP and two from Opposition parties -- came into force from 6 am on Tuesday. While Adityanath, Mayawati and Gandhi were found guilty of violating the model code, the EC said Khan not only violated the poll code, he also disregarded its November 2013 directive asking politicians to desist from “deeds or actions construed as being repugnant to the honour and dignity of women”. The bench was hearing a PIL filed by an NRI Yoga teacher based in Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), seeking a direction to the EC to take “strict action” against political parties if their spokespersons make remarks based on caste and religion in the media in the run up to the general elections. The apex court on Monday expressed displeasure over the EC not taking quick action against politicians for communal and hate speeches during the Lok Sabha campaigning and decided to examine the ambit of its power following submission that it was “toothless”. AFP THE INDEPENDENT AND AGENCIES PARIS, 16 APRIL French investigators probing the devastating blaze at Notre-Dame Cathedral questioned workers who were renovating the monument on Tuesday as hundreds of millions of euros were pledged to restore the historic masterpiece. As firefighters put out the last smouldering embers, a host of French billionaires and companies stepped forward with offers of cash worth around 600 million euros (USD 680 million) to remake the iconic structure. Most of the roof has has moved up by sheer hard work playing his cards well and after having worked under his father for over four decades. At the age of 14, Stalin jumped into politics by campaigning for his father’s party in 1967. However, he made his official entry in 1973 when he was inducted into the DMK general council. The present Lok Sabha elections are a do-or-die battle for Stalin. He has to practice what he has learnt from his father, the shrewdest politician of his time. Even in the 2016 Assembly polls, Stalin was the de facto leader. He attempted many things including an image make over for himself by sporting T-shirts and jeans instead of DMK’s traditional dhoti and half sleeve shirt to woo young voters. But the DMK did not win the polls. He has gone back to the traditional DMK attire now. Stalin has done well by cobbling together a formi- dable alliance comprising of the Congress, CPI (M), CPI, MDMK headed by Vaiko, VCK, a Dalit party, Indian Union Muslim League, Manithaneya Makkal Katchi, and Kongunadu Makkal Desiya Katchi, a Gounder outfit. The arithmetic of this coalition is quite strong. Unlike earlier times, Stalin has been quite flexible and has been generous to the Congress by giving 10 seats while his party is contesting only 20 seats. The rest are given to the other partners. The task ahead of Stalin is stupendous. He must make sure that the DMK coalition wins at least 25 to 30 Lok Sabha seats and 12 to 15 Assembly bye-election seats. It is not that easy. AIADMK’s anti-incumbency, lack of leadership, infighting and the TTV Dinakaran factor, which could split the AIADMK votes, could help the DMK to a certain extent. The AIADMK is split into two official and three unofficial factions. On the other hand, the DMK coalition is strong and united. Stalin is also looking to a scenario where the Edapadi government could fall after the Assembly bye polls if the DMK does well though Stalin’s aim is the 2021 Assembly polls. Stalin has matured as a leader and can rub shoulders with national leaders like Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and others. He has come far from his backroom boy days, hiding in the shadow of his father. Polling in this constituency will be held on 18 April. It was learnt Ahmed has also been “blacklisted” by the Union home ministry putting his future travel to India under a question mark. “After receiving a report from the Bureau of Immigration regarding visa violations committed by a Bangladesh national, Ferdous Ahmed, the home ministry has cancelled his business visa. The Foreigner Regional Registration Officer, Kolkata has been directed to ensure compliance of national ambitions. A senior DMK leader admits, “He has been working hard. It will take some time to reach the level of Kalaignar.” Stalin’s style of functioning, proximity to loyalists and his reluctance to expand his inner circle is also markedly different to his father's style. Stalin is not accessible. After Karunanidhi’s death, Stalin has taken some bold and pragmatic decisions. He announced that his party was against the BJP thus trying to remove a perception that the DMK was having a back channel with the BJP. He also boldly endorsed Rahul Gandhi as the UPA prime ministerial candidate. Defending his Rahul Gandhi for PM pitch, Stalin told NDTV’s Prannoy Roy last week, “I have not taken any risk. The Paris fire service said the last remnants of the blaze were extinguished on Tuesday 15 hours after the fire broke out. Ongoing renovation work on the steeple, where workers were replacing its lead covering, is suspected to have caused the inferno after the blaze broke out in an area under scaffolding. Now the party is not pressing much on Dravidian rationalism as we believe in doing justice to all people." Stalin has a lot going for him this time. The matter has also prompted the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission office in the city to reportedly ask the actor to go back to his country. Ferdous was first noticed campaigning for Mr Agarwal on 14 April in Raiganj, North Dinajpur. The state BJP leadership took up the matter with the state chief electoral officer (CEO) immediately alleging that the Trinamul Congress has violated the model code of conduct (MCC) allowing the foreign national to campaign for Mr Agarwal. “It’s a pathetic condition for Trinamul Congress because it brings Bangladeshi voters to win elections. Now, they are bringing an actor from the country for the same purpose,” BJP state president Dilip Ghosh alleged. Those who have engaged Bangladeshi actor, Ferdaus Ahmed to campaign for them should be arrested, Congress Rajya Sabha member, Pradip Bhattacharya said. The BJP state president said : “This is a serious issue. How can a foreign national with a business visa campaign for a candidate ?" Mr Bhattacharya added that he had informed the CEO that a foreign national had campaigned for a political party contesting the LS poll.
