It is alleged that the attackers included a group of men against whom Joshi had filed a complaint on July 16 accusing them of harassing his niece after he had objected to their betting racket in the locality.The journalist's family claimed that the police did not take action on his complaint. Joshi, 35, who worked with a local Hindi daily, was waylaid and shot at around 10.30 p.m. on Monday while he was returning home in Vijay Nagar area on a two-wheeler along with his two daughters, aged five and eleven years. ED sleuths were assisted by personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force, who were seen standing guard at the farmhouse and residence of the Gehlots' in Mandore area of Jodhpur district. Officials said the raids are being carried out against Ashok Gehlot's elder brother Agrasain Gehlot, who is the promoter of a seeds and fertiliser company identified as Anupam Krishi. Responding to the raids, Congress leader Randeep Surjewala told reporters in Jaipur, “Prime Minister Modi has created ‘raid raj’ in the country but we are not going to be scared.” The agency, officials said, is searching at least six locations in Rajasthan including at the premises of a former Congress MP . In the letter written on Sunday, the chief minister accused Shekhawat, other BJP leaders and some over-ambitious leaders of his own party for being involved in the conspiracy. Gehlot said the alleged attempt to bring down the Congress government in the state insulted the people's mandate and was an open violation of constitutional values. NEW DELHI, 22 JULY The Supreme Court Wednesday approved Uttar Pradesh government's draft notification for appointing former apex court judge Justice (retd) B S Chauhan as chairman of the 3-member inquiry commission on the killing of eight policemen and the subsequent encounter killings of gangster Vikas Dubey and five of his alleged associates. A bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde also told the Uttar Pradesh Police not to resort to further encounters to eliminate dreaded gangsters in the state, after Ghanshyam Upadhyay, who moved the apex court for an independent inquiry into the encounter, sought that UP government should not resort to encounter of other criminals in the state, who also have many cases like Dubey. The bench directed that the inquiry commission should start functioning within a week and the probe be concluded within two months. The other two members of the inquiry commission would be former high court judge Justice (retd) Shashi Kant Agarwal and retired Director General of Police of Uttar Pradesh K L Gupta. AFP STATESMAN NEWS SERVICE NEW DELHI, 22 JULY With 37,724 fresh Covid-19 cases in 24 hours, India’s total tally on Wednesday inched closer to the 12lakh-mark, according to the Union Health Ministry data, with the country’s total Coronavirus count reaching 11,92,915. The health ministry, meanwhile, said that India has recorded the highest ever number of recoveries in the last 24 hours. With as many as 28,472 patients getting discharged the total number of recoveries is more than 7.5 lakh. With 648 fresh deaths the death toll touched 28,732, but the recovery rate stood at 63.12 per cent with as many as 7,53,050 cured, which is almost twice the number of active patients at 4,11,133. The overall recovery rate in India is over 63%, while in 19 States/ UTs the recovery rate is higher than 63.13%. The increasing number of recovered patients has widened the difference between the active cases and recovered cases to 3,41,916 with as many as 4,11,133 actve cases. This difference is showing a progressively growing upward trend, the ministry said. While in 19 States/ UTs the recovery rate is higher than the national average, Delhi tops the chart with the highest number of recoveries at 84.83% followed by Ladakh and Telangana with 84.31% and 78.37%, respectively. Currently the third-worst hit country, India is now adding a lakh cases every three days. On Monday, the country had crossed the 11-lakh mark. New cases, deaths soar in state; fresh lockdown today KOLKATA, 22 JULY West Bengal today 2,291 fresh Covid cases and 39 deaths ~ the highest daily tally so far in both cases ~ in the last 24 hours. This came a day ahead of the state-wide lockdown that will be enforced from 6 a.m to 10 p.m tomorrow. All banks would remain closed during the lockdown on 23, 25 and 29 June. Banks had operated during the earlier phases of lockdown. Petrol pumps would remain open to service the vehicles that are allowed to ply on that day, said an official. There are 18,450 active Covid cases, though till now 49,321 people have been detected positive in the state, while a total of 1,221 Covid patients have died. A total of 29,650 patients have recovered till now with 1,615 people were discharged from hospitals today. The discharge rate was slightly higher at 60.11 per cent today. Kolkata again recorded the highest single-day tally with 692 cases but the situation in North 24-Parganas is also critical with 624 people being detected positive today. Howrah recorded 225 cases, South 24-Parganas 191 cases and Hooghly 139 cases. Of 39 Covid deaths that were recorded, 15 deaths were registered in Kolkata followed by North 24-Parganas with 11 deaths. Three persons died in South 24-Parganas and Hooghly, two in Howrah and one each in West Burdwan, East Midnapore, North and South Dinajpur and Darjeeling. The occupancy rate in hospitals is 39.55 per cent; 6794 out of 11,239 beds in Coviddesignated government hospitals and 450 out of 2262 Covid beds in private hospitals are SNS unoccupied.
