The researchers, including those from the government of Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh, found that over 70 per cent of Covid-19 infected patients in the country did not infect any of their contacts, while 8 per cent of infected individuals accounted for 60 per cent of observed new infections. The study of over half-million people in India found that both cases and deaths due to the disease have been more heavily concentrated in the 4069 year age group than is seen in high-income countries, PRESS TRUST OF INDIA NEW DELHI, 1 OCTOBER at around 3 p.m. on Thursday, they stated. PRESS TRUST OF INDIA BALRAMPUR (UP), 1 OCTOBER A 22-year-old Dalit woman died after allegedly being raped by two men in Uttar Pradesh's Balrampur district, succumbing to critical injuries on the same day as the teen from Hathras in the state who breathed her last in a Delhi hospital two weeks after she was gangraped. Both the women died on Tuesday and were cremated on Wednesday. The two men accused of assaulting the woman from Balrampur have been arrested, police said amid outrage over the death of the 19-year-old Dalit woman from Hathras. The Balrampur victim's mother told reporters on Wednesday night that the rapists broke her daughter's legs and back, a charge denied by the police. “My daughter had gone to take admission in a college on Tuesday. On her way back, three-four persons abducted her, took her to their room, gave her an injection and raped her. They later sent her back on an e-rickshaw, which dumped her outside our house. They broke her legs and back. She could not stand or talk,” the woman said. Quoting the victim's family members, Balrampur Superintendent of Police (SP) Dev Ranjan Verma said the woman worked in a private firm and returned home on Tuesday in a serious condition. We contradict this news.” She was cremated on Wednesday after the post-mortem in the presence of her family members, the police said. Largest contact tracing study in country shows Covid-19 transmitted mainly by 'superspreaders' among other trends. The researchers also found a high prevalence of infection among children who were contacts of other cases around their own age. The study, published in the journal Science on Wednesday, assessed the disease transmission patterns in 5,75,071 individuals exposed to 84,965 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the two states based on data collected by tens of thousands of contact tracers. According to the scientists, including Ramanan Laxminarayan from the Centre for Disease Dynamics, Economics, and Policy in New Delhi, the findings offer a peek into the pandemic's trajectory in a lowand middle-income country, where most Covid-19 cases have occurred. Based on the data, the scientists said both cases and deaths in the two Indian states were concentrated in younger cohorts than expected from Souped-up B777 for VVIP travel arrives in India A custom-made B777 aircraft, which will be used to fly the president, vice president and prime minister, has arrived in Delhi from the US on Thursday, said government officials. The plane was scheduled to be delivered by aircraft manufacturer Boeing to Air India in July but its delivery was delayed twice ~ once in July for a few weeks due to the Covid-19 pandemic and then in August for a few weeks due to technical reasons ~ the officials noted. Air India One, which is the call sign of the aircraft, landed at the Delhi airport from Texas woman was allegedly raped at a village in Hathras by four men on September 14. After her condition deteriorated, she was referred to the Delhi's Safdarjung hospital where she breathed her last on Tuesday. She was cremated in the early hours of Wednesday, with her family alleging the local police forced them to conduct the last rites in the dead of the night. Priyanka Gandhi said they were repeatedly stopped from going to Hathras. “When we all started our march on foot with Rahul ji, we were repeatedly stopped and lathis were rained on us in a barbaric manner. Many workers were injured. But our intention is clear. “The sticks of an egotistical government cannot stop us. I wish these lathis were used by this police while standing in defence of Hathras's Dalit daughter,” she said in a tweet in Hindi. Another gangrape victim dies in UP's Balrampur; 2 held likely to be received from Boeing at a later date, they noted. These two aircraft were part of Air India's commercial fleet for a few months in 2018 before they were sent back to Boeing for retrofitting them for VVIP travel. Officials said the total cost of purchase and retrofitting the two planes has been estimated to be around Rs 8,400 crore. The B777 planes will have state-of-the-art missile defence systems called Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasures (LAIRCM) and Self-Protection Suites (SPS). In February, the US agreed to sell the two defence systems to India at a cost of $190 million. During the travel of the VVIPs, the two B777 aircraft will be operated by pilots of the Indian Air Force (IAF) and not of Air India, an official said. Currently, the president, vice president and prime minister, fly on Air India's B747 planes, which have the call CMYK sign Air India One. Air India pilots fly these B747 aircraft for the dignitaries and the Air India Engineering Services Limited (AIESL) maintains them. When these B747 aircraft are not flying the dignitaries, they are used by the Indian national carrier for commercial operations. The custom-made B777 planes will be used for travel of the dignitaries only. The Centre has already initiated the process of divestment of its stake in Air India, which has a debt of over Rs 60,000 crore. However, the process has been postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. observations in higher-income countries. The study noted that contacts with the same age were associated with the greatest infection risk ~ a pattern, which the researchers said, was strongest among children between 0-14 years of age, and among adults older than 65 years. They said the proportion of deaths to the number of infected people, known as the case-fatality ratio (CFR), spanned 0.05 per cent at ages 5-17 years to 16.6 per cent at ages exceeding 85. The researchers also noted that Covid-19 patients in the two states have a median stay of five days in the hospital before death compared to 13 days to death from the date of hospital admission in the US. Follow-up testing of exposed contacts revealed that 70 per cent of infected individuals did not infect any of their contacts, while 8 per cent of coronavirus positive patients accounted for 60 per cent of observed new infections. The researchers said this finding presents the largest empirical demonstration of superspreading, which is when an unusually large number of individuals are infected by a few other people. The study said 63 per cent of those who died had at least one co-morbidity, and 36 per cent had two or more underlying health conditions that made them more susceptible to the disease. About 45 per cent of those who died were diabetic, the scientists said. Unlike observations in highincome countries, they said the deaths in India are concentrated at ages 50-64 years. In the two Indian states in particular, they said only 17.9 per cent of Covid19 deaths occurring on or before 1 August, 2020 were among people older than 75, compared with 58.1 per cent of deaths due to the disease in the US. Covid-led economic slowdown no ground to deny proper wages: SC STATESMAN NEWS SERVICE NEW DELHI, 1 OCTOBER The Supreme Court on Thursday said the burden of economic slowdown cannot be put on workers alone, and quashed a Gujarat government notification exempting factories from paying overtime wages to the workers. A bench headed by Justice D Y Chandrachud said the court is aware of the financial hardships faced by the factories due to lockdown amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. However, this economic slowdown cannot burden the workers, and the ongoing pandemic cannot become a potent reason to override the statutory provisions providing dignity and the right to proper wages to the workers. The court order came on a plea filed by a trade union challenging a notification of the Gujarat government which granted exemptions to all factories in Gujarat from provisions of the Factories Act, 1948, relating to daily and weekly working hours, intervals for rest and spread-overs of adult workers, and from the duty to pay overtime wages at double rate as fixed under section 59 of the Act. Air ticket refund:The Supreme Court Thursday directed refund of air tickets, domestic and international, booked for travel during the Covid-19 lockdown period from March 25 to May 24 within three weeks from the date of the cancellation of flights. Accepting the Centre's proposals in this regard, the court said that if any airline is unable to make the refund, they shall provide a credit shell, equal to the amount of fare collected, for the passenger concerned.
