After all, the photographs which are com- In a move that is bound to upset China, India today announced that Australia will join the upcoming Malabar naval exercise to be held in the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea later this year. This effectively means that all the four member countries of the “Quadrilateral” grouping that includes India, the USA, Japan and Australia will be participating for the first time in the mega naval exercise. India had started the Malabar series of naval exercises with the USA in 1992. Japan joined the exercise in 1992. Despite Canberra's keenness, India was reluctant to include Australia in the exercise keeping in mind the sensitivities of China. India has finally heeded to Australia’s request to be part of the exercise amidst strain in ties with China over the ongoing military stand-off in east- No Puja celebrations at Chittaranjan Park Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Chittaranjan Park in south Delhi, and its adjoining areas will not host Durga Puja celebrations this year, agency reports add from New Delhi. According to the data from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), India conducted 8,59,786 sample tests in a single day on Sunday, taking the total number of samples tested so far to 9,50,83,976. NEW DELHI, 19 OCTOBER With the addition of 55,722 coronavirus cases and 579 deaths in 24 hours, India's tally on Monday crossed the 75-lakh mark with a total of 75,50,273 cases. Out of these, 7,72,055 are currently active; 66,63,608 have been discharged, while 1,14,610 lost the battle against the pandemic. According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India's active cases have fallen below eight lakh after six weeks and continue to fall. The Ministry said: "22 states and UTs have less than 20,000 active cases, and only three are reporting more than 50,000 active caseload." After denying it for months, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan stated that India is in the stage of community transmission but it is limited to only certain districts and states. Vardhan said India, however, is on a steady trajectory of sustained fall in active cases which has stayed below 8 lakh for the third day. *India continues to report one of the lowest deaths per mil- lion population in the world... less than 1100 deaths reported for last 14 days,* he said, adding that 22 states/UTs have deaths per million lower than the national average. In a slew of directions applying to all the pujas of the state, the Bench laid down that no-entry boards should be displayed five metres from the extremity of a small pandal and 10 metres of a bigger one declaring the specified areas no-entry zones which are to be barricaded. Not more than 25 members of the club will be allowed inside a pandal, while a list naming these members will be on display outside the pandal. The number has to be fixed and cannot change daily, the Bench said. All puja pandals are to be treated as containment zones, the court directed. A Chinese Army soldier was apprehended in the Demchok sector of Eastern Ladakh today after he strayed across the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the Indian Army said. The soldier has been provided with required medical assistance including oxygen, food and warm clothes. “A PLA soldier, identified as Corporal Wang Ya Long, was apprehended in the Demchok sector of Eastern Ladakh on 19 October after he had strayed across the LAC,” the Army said in a statement. It said a request has also been received from the PLA about the whereabouts of the missing soldier. Sources said the PLA soldier would be returned after completion of all formalities, including verification whether he actually strayed into Indian territory accidentally or was on a spying mission. The soldier was apprehended amid the ongoing border military standoff between the two countries. The two countries are scheduled to hold the 8th round of talks at the corps commander level this week to find ways to resolve the standoff that has brought ties between them to a new low. The Global Times, the mouthpiece of the Communist regime in China, said that the capture of the PLA soldier by the Indian Army would not affect the upcoming talks between the Chinese and Indian militaries. Farooq Abdullah quizzed by Enforcement Directorate STATESMAN NEWS SERVICE JAMMU, 19 OCTOBER Within days of the former chief minister and sitting MP Farooq Abdullah playing a key role in forging unity among Kashmir’s mainstream political parties to struggle for restoration of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday questioned him in connection with alleged irregularities amounting to Rs.43 crores in the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA). Six mainstream political parties had last week met at the Srinagar residence of Abdullah to form the People's Alliance. Abdullah was president of the JKCA between 2001 and 2011, when the alleged financial irregularities took place. After more then six hours of questioning at the ED office at Srinagar’s Raj Bagh, Dr Farooq Abdullah told media persons in the evening that the battle to restore Articles 370 and 35A will continue, whether "I am alive or dead". Abdullah said the ED did its job and I did mine. The court will give its verdict on the case once it is put there by the ED.
