PM announces `1,000-cr ‘Startup India Seed Fund’ he world’s largest vaccination drive against Covid-19 got underway here on Saturday with Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanking scientists for developing two made in India vaccines and urging people to continue with the practice of wearing masks, maintaining hand hygiene, social distancing even after vaccination. In the national capital the vaccination was rolled out with sanitation worker Manish Kumar becoming the first recipient of the vaccine at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), according to the Health Ministry. The vaccination drive came as the country continued to witness a decline in number of Covid-19 patients and increase in rate of recovery. The vaccination drive preceded a concerted campaign by the government seeking to allay peoples’ fears about its side effects. In his address to the nation before launching the countrywide drive Prime Minister Modi had also urged people to come forward and join the campaign fearlessly. He sought to reassure people that emergency use authorisation was given to the two ‘made in India’ vaccines only after scientists were convinced of their safety and effectiveness. A consent form to be signed by the vaccine recipients said, “In case of any adverse events or serious adverse events, you will be provided medically recognised standard of care in the government designated centres and hospitals.” “The compensation will be paid by sponsor (BBIL) in case if the SAE is proven to be causally related to the vaccine,” the PTI form said. More on Pg 2,3 PRESS TRUST OF INDIA NEW DELHI, 16 JANUARY A farmer union requested the Supreme Court on Saturday to remove the remaining three members of the committee it had set up to resolve the impasse over the three contentious farm laws, and select people who can do the job “on the basis of mutual harmony”. The Bhartiya Kisan Union Lokshakti said the principle of natural justice is going to be violated as those appointed to the four-member committee “have already supported these laws”. In an affidavit, it also sought dismissal of a plea of the Central government, filed though the Delhi Police, seeking an injunction against the proposed tractor march or any Ex-servicemen join the kisan protest against the Centre’s farm laws at Delhi’s Gazipur border on Saturday. However, on 14 January, Mann recused himself from the committee. I think dissolution of the Parliament is a reflection of the internal issue. It is not wise to blame anybody,” Gyawali said. “Prime Minister Oli thought that time has come to seek a fresh mandate in line with universally accepted practice of seeking people’s views,” he said. Asked about the boundary row between Nepal and India, Gyawali said both the countries have common commitment to resolve the issue. “The sanctity and security of the border is extremely important for expanding the overall developmental cooperation...We both have realised the urgency (to resolve the border issue),” he said. Gyawali suggested that both sides are working on the modalities in mapping the areas concerned. WhatsAppdelays policy update rollout to 15 May PRESS TRUST OF INDIA NEW DELHI, 16 JANUARY WhatsApp has decided to delay the rollout of its new policy update to 15 May after massive criticism from users globally, including India, over concerns that data was being shared with its parent company Facebook. The move assumes significance for users in India given that the country is among the biggest markets for WhatsApp with over 400 million users. In a blog post, WhatsApp said it is moving back the date on which people will be asked to review and accept the terms. “No one will have their account suspend- ed or deleted on 8 February. We’re also going to do a lot more to clear up the misinformation around how privacy works on WhatsApp. We’ll then go to people to review the policy at their own pace before new business options are available on 15 May,” it said. A raging debate ensued after WhatsApp said it will update its terms of service and privacy policy around how it processes user data and partners with Facebook to offer integrations across the social media giant’s products. Concerned about the data privacy, many users have thronged to rival messaging platforms such as Signal and Telegram. Details on Page 8
