The chief minister had earlier lost the Nandigram elections narrowly to her former aide Suvendu Adhikari, now leader of the Opposition from the BJP in the state Assembly. She has since filed a legal challenge to the election result. After her defeat, Sovandeb Chattopadhyay, a state minister, vacated the Bhawanipore seat to facilitate her return to the Assembly from there. The TMC had then won the seat in the April-May Assembly polls by a margin of around 28,000 votes. Miss Banerjee said that she had won in all the wards in Bhawanipore. The bomb targeted the sprawling Eidgah Mosque in Kabul, where a memorial service was being held for the mother of Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid. Those killed in the attack were civilians standing outside the mosque gate. He did not provide a figure for the number killed and said an investigation was ongoing. Inaugurating a PET-MRI wing at the State Cancer Institute in Assam, he said that it would not only greatly help in more accurate diagnosis, but also reduce patients’ exposure to radiation. The PET-MRI machine was the fourth such machine in India, which is based on Time-of-Flight technology. Referring to the stepdown cancer care, which the Assam government proposes to implement in partnership with Tata Trusts, he advised other states to emulate it for providing timely and effective treatment to cancer patients.
