(Earlier report on P12) NEW DELHI, 7 OCTOBER he Supreme Court on Thursday sought from the Uttar Pradesh government a status report on Friday giving details as to who are the accused named in the FIR filed in Lakhimpur Kheri violence case and whether they have been arrested or not. The directions came four days after a group of farmers was run over by a car in an Union minister's convoy in Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur Kheri. The court asked the UP government to specify the action taken and details of those who were killed in the violence that erupted on Sunday amidst a protest against Union Minister Ajay Mishra's visit. “We want to know who are the accused, whether arrested or not," a Bench headed by Chief Justice N V Ramana and comprising Justices Surya Kant and Hima Kohli told UP's Additional Advocate General Garima Parshad. The Swedish Academy said the award was in recognition of Gurnah's“uncompromising and compassionate penetration of the effects of colonialism and the fate of the refugee." Born in Zanzibar, Gurnah recently retired as a professor at the University of Kent. His novel Paradisewas shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1994. AP (Pg 10) Terrorists on Thursday barged into a government school in the Eidgah locality of Srinagar and at point blank range shot dead the woman principal and a male teacher. The attack came less than 48 hours after the assassination of three civilians on Tuesday evening. The Pakistan-based The Resistance Front (TRF), a frontal organisation of the Lashkar-e-Taiyyaba, said it carried out the killing. The principal, Satinder Kaur, belonged to the Sikh community, while teacher Deepak Chand was from Jammu and had joined the job about three years ago. Both Bereaved kin of Satinder Kaur, shot dead by gunmen in Srinagar on Thursday. Eyewitnesses said that at least three terrorists barged into the school around 11.15 a.m. and called the principal and teachers out. They shot the victims with pistols and escaped. The incident triggered widespread condemnation of the terrorists. The government has also come under criticism for allowing a free run to terrorists. Union Health Ministry joint secretary Lav Agarwal said, “Please watch your October, November, December” as he repeatedly asserted that the second wave of the pandemic is not over. He advised people to avoid crowded places and unnecessary travel and to stay home, celebrate festivals virtually and explore online modes of shopping. The government said that though the situation is plateauing, the country is still reporting 20,000-odd new infections every day. Officials also said that 71 per cent of the country's adult population have received at least one dose of Covid-19 vaccine and 27 per cent have got both doses, as the cumulative vaccine shots administered in the country crossed 93 crore. The government, meanwhile, has allowed Serum Institute of India to export 10 lakh Covishield doses each to Nepal, Myanmar and Bangladesh, while Bharat Biotech will provide Iran with 10 lakh doses of Covaxin under the 'Vaccine Maitri' programme in October.
