The active cases comprise 0.49 per cent of the total infections, the lowest since March 2020, while the national Covid- 19 recovery rate was recorded at 98.18 per cent, the highest since March 2020, the ministry said. The recovery of 18,762 patients in the last 24 hours has increased the cumulative tally to 3,35,67,367. Meanwhile, Kerala on Monday saw 6,664 people turn Covid positive from 61,202 samples tested and the test positivity rate was 10.88 per cent, said a statement from chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan. MANAS R BANNERJEE SILIGURI, 25 OCTOBER West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today said that offline classes in schools for standards IX-XII, and in colleges across the state will resume from 16 November. Miss Banerjee made the announcement after an administrative review meeting for Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar districts at Uttarkanya, the government secretariat for north Bengal, here today. After calculating the days of the festivals, the chief minister asked officials to prepare schools and colleges so that students can attend the classes. Later, speaking to th reporters, Miss Banerjee said: “As 15 November is the birth anniversary of Birsa Munda, a holiday, schools and colleges Bengal CM Mamata made the announcement after an administrative review meeting for Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar districts will be reopening from 16 November.” The state government had earlier said that if the Covid situation normalized, such offline classes would resume from 15 November. A Bench of Justices AM Khanwilkar and CT Ravikumar asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who was representing the Centre, to file a short affidavit on the issue within three days. SW monsoon withdrawal complete from entire country Simultaneously, the northeast monsoon rains commenced over extreme south peninsular India NEW DELHI, 25 OCTOBER The India Meteorological Department announced that withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from the entire country is complete and simultaneously, the northeast monsoon rains commenced over extreme south peninsular India on Monday. “In view of significant reduction in rainfall activity over most parts of the country, the southwest monsoon has withdrawn from the entire country today. Simultaneously, with the setting in of northeasterly winds in the lower tropospheric levels, the northeast monsoon rains has commenced over extreme south peninsular India,” the IMD said in a statement here. Comparison of date of withdrawal of southwest monsoon 2021 from the entire country with its historical date for the period of 19752020 shows that this year’s date is the fifth most delayed monsoon withdrawal during 19752021. Interestingly, out of these seven years, during recent years of 2010-2021, for five years, viz. 2010, 2016, 2017, 2020 and 2021, there was late withdrawal (October 25). Last week, the IMD had announced that complete withdrawal of SW monsoon was likely to take place on IANS October 26.
