Army has been deployed to assist the civil administration for rescuing the travelers stranded since last evening. Army troops provided food and medical aid to the stranded people. Cold wave condition was being experienced across Jammu and Kashmir because of unseasonal snowfall at higher reaches. Kashmir valley experienced coldest June day in at least past 48 years. Electric supply in many areas has been hit due to damage to the power supply infrastructure. Officials warned that the toll may still rise. The most affected areas are in Spera District in Khost Province, and Barmala, Ziruk, Naka and Gayan districts in Paktika Province. “We have over 1,000 dead and over 1,500 wounded. Many villages were destroyed,” Amin Huzaifa, the head of the culture and information department of Paktika province, told Sputnik news agency. The quake, measuring 6.1 on the Richter Scale, occurred around 1.30 a.m. local time, the official said.He said that many of the victims are from the Gayan district of the province. According to local officials, helicopter and rescue teams have arrived in the area. Taliban spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid said that an emergency cabinet meeting was held today to discuss assistance for the people affected by the earthquake.
