The male tiger, said to be about 3-4 years of age, entered the premises of the prestigious Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (MANIT) located in the heart of the state capital of Madhya Pradesh. The big cat has been loitering in the institute’s 650-acre campus for the past six days. It has so far preyed on a cow and a calf, spreading panic amongst MANIT’s 6000-odd residents, around 5000 of whom are hosteller students from all over India and some are from abroad too. About 1000 staff members, faculty, workers and their families also reside in the sprawling campus, which has almost a 100-acre area under tree cover and bushes, almost like a small forest. A team of forest officials has placed cages with bait in an attempt to capture the tiger but to no avail yet. The first glimpse of the elusive big cat’s was finally captured at around 2 a.m. yesterday on a camera trap placed in the campus by forest staff. According to officials, the tiger has been named T-123-4, as it appears to be the progeny of a tigress, T-123, who has been present for a long time in the nearby forests, which are connected to the back of the MANIT campus, from where the tiger is assumed to have gained entry into the premises. As a precautionary measure, the MANIT authorities have suspended in–person classes for the time being and switched to online mode. Forest officials are hopeful that the tiger would be captured and rescued soon. They also assume that going by the behavior pattern of tigers, the feline is likely to move out of the campus voluntarily after 7-8 days, as that is the duration a tiger stays in one place. According to Bhopal Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Alok Pathak, the young tiger was probably moving in the low-lying ravine-like areas spread over in a forest area of about 300-400 acres, and connected to the back of MANIT. the guidelines made by the UGC, a college fulfilling the eligibility as per these regulations, intending to become autonomous will submit the application on UGC portal anytime during the year.
