S S RAMASWAMY India would be hoping SYDNEY, 9 NOVEMBER ndia, aiming to clinch the ICC men’s T20 World Cup and end a 15-year title drought, hold the slightest of edges against their semi-final opponents England as the two teams prepare to battle it out at the Adelaide Oval tomorrow for a spot in Sunday’s final. However, Rohit Sharma and his men in blue will need to play to their full potential to overcome the Englishmen, led by opener Jos Buttler, and keep on track in breaking their title jinx. It’s a do-or-die game and will be a test of nerves as well as skills for a place in the summit clash of the tournament at the huge Melbourne Cricket Ground on 13 November. “We have got to be at our best to win the game,” said India captain Rohit Sharma at his pre-match media conference in Adelaide today. India have been beaten once in the league stage of the competition, with South Africa proving too good for Sharma and his men on a bouncy pitch in cold conditions in Perth. Their semi-final opponents for tomorrow, England, too lost one of their five group games, through the DLS method to Ireland in Melbourne in a rain-marred match. While India won their remaining four games to top Group 2, England’s match against arch-foes Australia got washed away without a ball being bowled and they won the other three. India finished on top of their group with eight points while England ended up in a triple-way tie on seven points with New Zealand and Australia in their group and advanced by virtue of superior net run rate as the sec- to enter their third T20 World Cup final when they lock horns against England in the second semifinal at the Adelaide Oval on 10 November I The Men in Blue would Skipper Rohit Sharma during a practice session ahead of the semifinal match against England, in Adelaide. ANI ond-best team along with toppers New Zealand.Recent past records and the overall display here are in favour of India gaining their entry into the final past England. While India have two batters, former captain Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav in prime form, the same cannot be said of the England lineup.Openers Buttler, already in the 100-game club, and Alex Hales have been among the runs, albeit not to the extent of Kohli, who is the leading run scorer with 246 runs to his credit, or Yadav (225 from five matches). Hales has aggregated 125 runs, two more than Indian vice-captain K L Rahul who has two half centuries to his name.Buttler has 119 in his kitty, but ace all-rounder Ben Stokes is yet to hit the straps and has just 58 runs to his name, a far cry from what he is capable of.So too is the case with another key batter, Dawid Malan, who is not only off the boil but is also carrying an injury.England are also sweating on the fitness of their express pace bowler Mark Wood who had to pull short on his training stint yesterday due to a stiff body.Wood, with HASARANGA REGAINS TOP SPOT IN ICC MEN’S T20I PLAYER RANKINGS US MIDTERM POLLS: DEMOCRATS SHOW SURPRISING STRENGTH be oozing with confidence heading into this knockout fixture having topped Group 2 winning four of their five matches. There was a little bruising, but it's absolutely fine now,” the Indian captain declared. The Indian batting, in short, has performed better than England’s although captain Rohit, who has scored 383 runs in 14 games against the same opposition in the past with two fifties and one hundred in it, has been far from his wonted self. Kohli, who is in touching distance of the 4000-run mark in his T20I career while averaging over 52 per innings, has a highly impressive record against England, having tallied 589 runs from 19 matches with a top effort of 80 not out off 52 balls as recently as in March at Ahmedabad. Kohli expectedly looms large along with Surya whose audacious shot-making is bound to test the England bowlers too.In bowling, India have relied upon their pacers Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya for getting the wickets. They are expected to go in with the same combination against England. It would be interesting to see whether leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal gets a lookin, after not playing in any of the five league games, in place of left-arm orthodox slow bowler Axar Patel as the other spinner to partner Ravichandran Ashwin. “To be honest, not really worried, as such, because he hardly got to bowl in this tournament. Except that game against Netherlands he's not bowled full overs of his quota, only because of the condition that is on offer,” Rohit replied when asked whether the team was worried about Axar’s economy rate.“We've got four seamers who have bowled all of their quota, which means the spinners will not bowl their overs,” he added to buttress his point. Both the ‘keepers Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant are “in play now (in the running to make the eleven)", said Rohit.Karthik played the first four matches while Pant was included in the last game against Zimbabwe. Overall, India have scored seven victories over England in their last eleven clashes after the latter were dominating earlier, winning six of the teams’ first ten match-ups. P12 Charged-up Pak crush NZ to storm into final S S RAMASWAMY SYDNEY, 9 NOVEMBER Babar Azam, woefully out of form in the league stage, struck timely form after being dropped off the first ball he faced in the ICC T20 World Cup semi-final at the Sydney Cricket Ground tonight. And the Pakistan captain punished the Kiwis for the costly lapse by wicket keeper Devon Conway off the bowling of Trent Boult, a one handed effort that the stumper couldn’t latch on to. Taking full advantage of the largesse, Azam piloted his team into their third final in the history of the competition, and their first since winning the title in 2009, with a wellcrafted half century. Azam, who had just 39 to his credit after five games in the Super 12 stage, compiled 53 in 42 balls which was his 30th half ton. He struck 7 fours, most of them timed well. More importantly he also put on a century partnership with his opening partner Mohammed Rizwan who too recorded a half century (57 in 43 balls with 5 fours). The duo’s stand of 105 in 12.4 overs, their third triple digit stand in T20 World Cups and ninth overall, smoothened the path for Pakistan as they convincingly chased down New Zealand’s modest tally of 152 after rattling up 55 runs in power play and 87 at the end of ten overs. They finally clinched the contest by seven wickets with five balls to spare with Shan Masood and Iftikhar Ahmed being the not out batsmen at the crease Pakistan now await the winners of the second semi-final between India and England, to be held at the Adelaide Oval tomorrow, in the final on November 13 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. It had been a remarkable turnaround in the fortunes of Pakistan in the competition as they looked down for the count till South Africa shockingly lost to the Netherlands and gave their chances a fresh lease of life. Today they fielded brilliantly, bowled with purpose and batted in determined fashion, egged on by a raucous capacity crowd filled with their flag waving and shouting supporters, to outsmart New Zealand who were aiming for their third straight entry into an ICC World Cup summit clash. In contrast, New Zealand performed below par with the bat and the ball and even more surprisingly in their pet department, fielding too.Electing to bat on winning the toss, New Zealand were ‘I suspect my phone is being tapped’ PM to visit 4 Southern states on 11-12 Nov Justice Chandrachud HYDERABAD, 9 NOVEMBER Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the Southern states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana on 11 and 12 November. CMYK rocked by an incisive opening spell by the tall Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Afridi who got opener Finn Allen leg before in the third ball. Allen’s opening partner Devon Conway was run out by a brilliantly directed throw from mid-on by Shan Masood off the last ball of power play. And the Kiwis couldn’t recover fully from these two early blows that reduced them to 38 for two in six overs. New Zealand captain KaneWilliamson rallied the side around with his classy knock of 46 in 42 balls. He was also sent back by Afridi at the right time for Pakistan, in the 17th over when he was ready to cut loose. Daryl Mitchell’s fine counter-attacking innings of 53 off 35 balls, inclusive of 3 fours and one six, gave New Zealand a total that looked healthier before Azam got the costly reprieve and took the game away in the company of his long-time partner Rizwan. Both were dismissed by the unlucky left arm bowler Boult in his second spell but by then the damage had been done. Lord Justice Jeremy Stuart-Smith and Justice Robert Jay, who heard the appeal earlier this year, delivered the verdict that allowed the fugitive businessman's extradition to India, according to reports. Nirav Modi had appealed against his extradition where he would face trial in the fraud case linked to the PNB. "...We are far from satisfied that Mr Modi's mental condition and the risk of suicide are such that it would be either unjust or oppressive to extradite him", the HC said, as per reports. However the process of bringing him from London back to India may take some time. Nirav Modi has the option of approaching the Supreme Court against the High Court's order within 14 days.
