The central Congress leadership will take various factors, including the views of newlyelected legislators in Karnataka, into account before choosing the new leader of the Congress legislature party in the state, it is learnt. After detailed discussions with newly-appointed Congress legislators in Karnataka on choosing the new leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP), the three AICC observers have returned to the national capital and are expected to submit their report to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge tonight. The race for leadership is between former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and state Congress chief D K Shivakumar. Kharge had deputed former Maharashtra Chief Minister Sushil Shinde, Jitendra Singh (Congress General Secretary) and Deepak Babaria (former Congress General Secretary) as the observers for the election of the CLP Leader of Karnataka. According to Jitendra Singh, the observers met all the Congress legislators yesterday to ascertain their views on the new CLP leader. ''We will ‘Headway in advanced technology must for India to deal with emerging threats’ STATESMAN NEWS SERVICE NEW DELHI, 15 MAY Defence Minister Rajnath Singh today exhorted research institutes to speed up activities in advanced technology and achieve progress to make India fully capable of dealing with emerging threats related to cyber and space. Addressing the 12th convocation ceremony of the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT), Pune, he shared insights on the continuously changing political and economic equations among nations in the current global scenario. The minister stated that Science & Technology and methods of warfare were evolving at a rapid pace and there was a need to make fast progress in advanced technology to deal with non-kinetic or contactless warfare, which the world today was witnessing, in addition to the conventional methods. “If our adversary possesses more advanced technologies, it can be a cause of concern for us in the future. There is an urgent need to move fast towards technological advancements in line with the changing times. This responsibility lies with our institutions. The defence sector is not a stagnant lake, but a flowing river. Just as a river, we need to keep surging ahead overcoming obstacles,” he said. Highlighting the deep connection between cutting-edge technologies and defence research, Rajnath also called upon the institutions such as DIAT to come up with new innovations which are not only useful to the defence sector but equally effective for civilians as well. Elaborating on the government’s vision to achieve ‘Aatmanirbharta’ in defence, he termed it as the most crucial component, which was essential for strengthening the security apparatus of the country. He, however, clarified that self-reliance did not mean isolation from the world. “Today, the world has become a global village and isolation isn’t possible. The aim of self-reliance is to meet the needs of the Armed Forces by building necessary equipment/platforms with our own capacity while fulfilling the security requirements of our friendly countries,” he said. Rajnath emphasised that dependence on the import of defence equipment could become a hindrance to India’s strategic autonomy, which was the main reason the government was making all-out efforts to achieve self-reliance in the sector. “Without self-reliance, we cannot take independent decisions on global issues in line with our national interests. More equipment we import; the more adverse impact it will have on our Balance of Trade. We aim to become a net exporter instead of a net importer,” he said. give our report to the Congress President,'' he added. On Sunday evening, the Congress Legislature Party unanimously authorised the Congress President to appoint the new Leader of the CLP. Siddaramaiah has also rushed to Delhi to meet Kharge while Shivakumar was celebrating his birthday with his supporters at his residence in Bengaluru. The central party leadership is unable to ignore the equally strong claims of both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar, given the fact that they played a pivotal role in ensuring the party's impressive victory in the state. Siddaramaiah is a popular Lingayat leader and Shivakumar is a Vokaligga leader and both are popular among the masses. Shivakumar is also credited with reviving the party in the state as its chief. Earlier on Monday, Congress' Karnataka President D.K. Shiv- akumar on Monday quipped that he does not have a single MLA on his side, as "all the 135 MLAs who won in the elections belong to the Congress". "Let's leave the matter of CM to the high command," he said. Addressing reporters, Shivakumar said that he is the single man and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge will take a call on the leadership matter. "When I became KPCC President, Sonia Gandhi has assured me... When the coalition (with JD-S) government collapsed in Karnataka and we lost 15 MLAs, I did not budge and built the party," he said. Supporters of both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar have started poster war claiming that their leader is the future CM of Karnataka. Meanwhile, Lingayat seers have met and demanded that since 39 Lingayat MLAs have been elected, the DCM post should be given to them.
