The Prime Minister will also dedicate the Durgapur–Kolkata section of the Durgapur-Haldia Natural Gas Pipeline to the nation. STATESMAN NEWS SERVICE NEW DELHI, 17 JULY India and the United Kingdom are likely to sign a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) next week, which is expected to eliminate import taxes on nearly 99 per cent of Indian exports to the UK, reports said. The agreement has been under negotiation for several months and finalised in May. It aims to ease tariffs and increase investment between the two countries. The FTA will eliminate taxes on labour-intensive goods such as leather, footwear, and clothing. In return, India will reduce tariffs on high-value British imports like whisky and luxury cars. India will gradually lower import duties on British whisky from 150 per cent to 40 per cent over a 10year period. Taxes on imported cars from the UK will also drop ~ currently over 100 per cent, they are set to come down to just 10 per cent. Both India and the UK hope this FTA will double bilateral trade to $120 billion by 2030. Apart from goods, the deal is expected to encourage investment, enhance professional mobility, and improve access to tech services. "We would particularly caution against any double standards on the matter," the Gunmen storm Patna hospital, kill undertrial IMRAN MOJIB PATNA, 17 JULY In yet another shocking incident in Patna, a group of men stormed into a prominent private hospital located close to the state police headquarters in Patna early on Thursday and gunned down a patient. The attackers, reportedly five in number, fired multiple rounds at Chandan Mishra, an undertrial prisoner who was on parole for medical treatment in Paras Hospital. The assailants fled the scene immediately after the attack, causing panic and chaos in the hospital. A resident of Buxar, Chandan Mishra, the victim, had several murder cases registered against him. He had been imprisoned in Beur Jail, Patna, since 2024. He later succumbed to his injuries. Following the incident, police from the Shastri Nagar police station, Inspector General of Police (Patna Range) Jitendra Rana, and Patna SSP Kartikey Sharma reached the scene and began an investigation. The police are examining the CCTV footage from the hospital. Patna SSP Kartikey Sharma told mediapersons that multiple rounds were fired at Mishra. He said: “This appears to be a case of gang rivalry. Efforts are underway to identify the shooters. Photos have been shared with local police stations.” This incident came close on the heels of the killing of BJP leader and prominent businessman Gopal Khemka in the state capital. Khemka’s murder was followed by the killing of another BJP leader, Surendra Kewat, prominent businessman Vikram Jha, and sand dealer Ramakant Yadav. The series of murders have raised serious questions about the law and order situation in the state, evoking sharp criticism from the Opposition. Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Assembly, Tejashwi Yadav, in a message posted on ‘X’, said: “Government criminals stormed into the ICU and shot a patient admitted to the hospital. Is anyone anywhere safe in Bihar?” Taking a dig at Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Mr Yadav said: “2005 se pahale aise hota tha jee?” Independent MP Pappu Yadav also reached the hospital, but the police stopped him outside the hospital. On Wednesday, Bihar ADG (Law and Order) Kundan Krishnan had announced that Bihar Police will form a ‘Shooter Cell’ and SPs and SSPs of all districts have been instructed to prepare detailed data of notorious shooters in their jurisdictions. AGENCIES The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) on Thursday cautioned against “selective and unverified reporting”, regarding the Air India Ahmedabad crash, particularly by international media outlets, calling such coverage “irresponsible and potentially damaging to the probe’s integrity”. The AAIB reacted after the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that a cockpit recording of dialogue between the two pilots of the ill-fated Air India flight, that crashed last month indicates the captain cut the flow of fuel to the plane's engines. “It has come to our attention that certain sections of the international media are repeatedly attempting to draw conclusions through selective and unverified reporting,” said AAIB in a statement. “Such actions are irresponsible, especially while the investigation remains ongoing. We urge both the public and the media to refrain from spreading premature narratives that risk undermining the integrity of the investigative process,” the probe agency added. “At this stage, it is too early to reach any definite conclusions. The investigation by AAIB is still not complete. The Final Investigation Report will come out with root causes and recommendations," it noted. Earlier in the day, the Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) said in a letter to the Civil Aviation Ministry that the AAIB preliminary report on the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad has failed to sufficiently consider two plausible and previously documented technical scenarios, either of which could have triggered an automated shutdown of both engines of the ill-fated Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Theassociation urged the Civil Aviation Ministry to include more subject matter experts in the investigation. RCB unilaterally invited people to IPL victory celebrations: K’taka govt in status report to HC AGENCIES BENGALURU, 17 JULY The Karnataka government in its status report submitted to the High Court regarding the 4 June stampede tragedy at the Chinnaswamy Stadium which claimed 11 lives in Bengaluru, has stated that the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) invited people to the IPL victory celebrations unilaterally, without consulting the police, sources confirmed on Thursday. The High Court recently issued an order to provide the status report on the stampede prepared by the state government to respondents i.e. the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), RCB and the DNA event management firm, setting aside the state's request to keep the report confidential. The report stated that the RCB invited people for the victory celebration event at the Chinnaswamy Stadium unilaterally and also without consultation and the required permission from the police department. The information was given as an intimation to the police rather than requesting the permission with the due procedure, sources stated. Government providing all possible help in Nimisha Priya case: MEA STATESMAN NEWS SERVICE NEW DELHI, 17 JULY The government is providing all possible assistance to Nimisha Priya, a Kerala nurse facing a death sentence in Yemen, the Ministry of External Affairs Thursday said, confirming that the execution of the death sentence, originally scheduled for 16 July 2025, has been postponed. “The government has appointed a lawyer to assist Nimisha Priya's family. Regular consular visits have been arranged. The Ministry of External Affairs is in constant touch with local authorities in Yemen and Nimisha Priya's family members,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at his weekly press briefing. Nimisha Priya, a nurse from Kerala, was sentenced to death in Yemen for the murder of a Yemeni national, Talal Abdo Mehdi. Her family is working towards securing her release through a "blood money" settlement, a practice permitted under Yemeni law. She has been on death row in Yemen's Central prison since 2018, after being convicted of the 2017 murder of a Yemeni citizen. Ms Priya had allegedly injected her employer with a fatal overdose of sedatives. Her family maintains she was acting in self-defense and that her business partner was abusive and kept her passport from her after the country's civil war broke out. Meanwhile, despite the postponement of the execution, the kin of Talal Abdo Mehdi, who was allegedly murdered by Nimisha Priya, are reported to have asserted that there can be no pardon for the crime.
