Speaking to Fox News aboard Air Force One en route to Alaska, Trump said the USA may not impose secondary tariffs on countries continuing to buying Russian crude oil. "Well, he (Vladimir Putin) lost an oil client, so to speak, which is India, which was doing about 40 per cent of the oil. China, as you know, is doing a lot…,” said Trump. “And if I did what's called a secondary sanction, or a secondary tariff, it would be very devastating from their standpoint. If I have to do it, I'll do it. Maybe I won't have to do it,” he added. The secondary 25 per cent NEW DELHI, 16 AUGUST tariffs on India are likely to come into effect from 27 August. Earlier this week, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said if “things don't go well” between Trump and Putin at the Alaska summit, then secondary sanctions on India for purchasing Russian oil could go higher. New Delhi has already said the targeting of India is unjustified and unreasonable. “Like any major economy, India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security,” the government had said. The fact is that India has sharply increased its purchases of oil and gas from America. This, in turn, has led to a reduction in India’s trade surplus with the US, which is a major aim of the Trump administration’s trade policy. Official figures show that India’s oil and gas imports from the US have jumped by as much as 51 per cent from January to June this year. CEC Gyanesh Kumar to address his first presser amid Oppn heat over Bihar SIR AGENCIES New Delhi, 16 August All eyes will be on Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar on Sunday, 17 August, as he will address his first press conference since taking charge of the Election Commission of India (ECI) in February this year after his predecessor Rajiv Kumar’s retirement. The briefing, scheduled for 3 p.m. at the National Media Centre in New Delhi, comes at a politically charged moment, with the poll body under intense scrutiny from the Opposition. The immediate backdrop is the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) drive in Bihar, which has snowballed into a national political flashpoint. Opposition parties have accused the poll panel of “colluding” with the BJP to manipulate voter rolls ~ a charge the Commission has firmly denied via official sources, through its social media accounts and by issuing fact-checks. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, a few days back, presented what he called “pro of ” of voter list manipulation, citing alleged irregularities in Karnataka’s Mahadevapura constituency and drawing parallels to the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly polls. That marked a notable shift in the Opposition’s strategy ~ moving away from its years-long focus on Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) to directly challenging the ECI’s credibility. The Bihar SIR drive, coupled with demands for transparency in linking Aadhaar to voter rolls, has become the latest rallying point against the poll panel. For Gyanesh Kumar, the stakes could not be higher. His remarks on Sunday will not only be his maiden opportunity to set the tone of his leadership but could also shape public perception of the ECI at a time when its impartiality is under the scanner. Media questions are expected to range from the Bihar SIR drive to the inclusion of Aadhaar, and from the conduct of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls to last year’s Maharashtra Assembly elections. Promo launch of The Bengal Files disrupted in Kolkata hotel STATESMAN NEWS SERVICE KOLKATA, 16 AUGUST The promotional trailer launch of filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri’s upcoming film The Bengal Files ran into controversy on Saturday after a luxury hotel in Kolkata abruptly halted the event soon after it began, citing no official reason. Agnihotri, known for directing The Kashmir Files, told reporters that hotel authorities informed him the screening could not go ahead, allegedly following instructions from an unspecified “powerful force.” “Without any reason, the electricity connection to the screening hall was cut off. There has been a heavy police presence here since morning. We are filmmakers, not criminals. I never imagined facing this situation in the land of | Satyajit Ray. If this is not dictatorship or fascism, then what is it?” Agnihotri said from the stage. The launch was originally planned at a multiplex, but Agnihotri claimed political pressure forced organisers to shift it to a five-star hotel. After initial delays on Saturday, the trailer was played briefly before being stopped midway. Producer and actor Pallavi Joshi, who is also Agnihotri’s wife, said: “You can see for yourself what is happening here.” Some local reports suggested the event lacked proper municipal permissions, prompting police to intervene. Agnihotri, however, dismissed that suggestion: “How can such a big event be organised without permission?” Hotel authorities did not respond to Press' requests for comment. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Union minister Sukanta Majumdar on Saturday condemned the disruption of the trailer launch of The Bengal Files, alleging the event was sabotaged under political pressure. “In the land of Satyajit Ray, West Bengal has once again witnessed a shameful episode that shatters every limit of democratic decency,” Mr Majumdar wrote on X. Agnihotri’s film purportedly recreates the turbulence of Partition-era Bengal and the communal violence that engulfed the province then. While the story is set around 16 August 1946, critics have alleged that several dialogues in the film deliberately provoke communal divisions.
